Active Committee

Introducing our new Active School Committee. Each child here will be representing our school on our mission to keep active.

The children have lots of jobs to do such as:

  • announcing Active School notices over the intercom.
  • visiting classrooms to talk to classes about our different activities.
  • taking photos of activities for ASF website.
  • keeping the Active School noticeboard up to date.
  • being responsible for PE equipment during PE lessons.
  • keeping the PE storeroom in check.
  • conducting and recording surveys.
  • checking the active school suggestion box
  • making future plans to make sure the school is as active as possible
  • explaining/demonstrating playground games to junior classes.
Pupils who take part in physical activity and their achievements are recognised in our school. Pupils visit classrooms showing their medals and speak about their achievements. Pupils photos are taken and put on the school website. Local sports coaches often visit the school- GAA coach Martin Hosey took various classes throughout the year for football and we recently had a visit from FAI soccer coaches who took various classes to teach them some soccer skills.
School Club Links

We are very lucky to have forged a great link with our local GAA club Palatine. This school-club link has provided us with many coaches over the years who deliver fun and dynamic skills in football, hurling and camogie. Our present school-club coach is Martin Hosey who has provided a term of coaching to senior infants and first class and will continue with second and third classes in April.

County Football Star Seán Gannon

County Football star Seán Gannon visited Bennekerry NS and did a skills morning with 1st and 2nd class. Great fun was had by all!

Cluster Blitz

A most enjoyable day was had at our 'Cluster Blitz' where Carlow GAA hosted Bennekerry N.S and Tinryland N.S in Palatine GAA club. Various fun activities were set out in a carousel style manner and pupils from 4th-6th enjoyed different skills and coaches while soaking up the great weather!  After lunch, the children were mixed into many teams and they played full and conditioned games. A great day of activity, games and competitions was had by all.

Urban School Blitz

Bennekerry N.S entered three teams into the Urban School Blitz host by Leo McGoff. The children got to display their hurling and camogie skills playing teams from Askea B.N.S, Tullow N.S. and Graiguecullen N.S to name but a few. Although competitive, lots of fun was had and its great to see hurling and camogie beginning to take root in Bennekerry and we hope that it continues.
